Beware of distraction burglaries - "if in doubt, keep them out!"

Distraction Burglaries

A number of ‘distraction burglaries’ have been reported where a male and female have stated that they are from Age Concern in order to gain access to older people’s homes in Surrey and across Southern England.

Age Concern Runnymede would like to reinforce the vital importance of doorstep etiquette –

Check the identity of a caller before you open the door to them

  • Telephone a neighbour or a friend to come and check them out for you
  • Don’t keep large quantities of cash at home
  • Keep the doors and windows secure at all times.  Always put your door chain on before you open the door
  • Your Careline alarm can be used to provide peace of mind when you have a stranger at the door.  Without letting them in and by pressing the red button alarm you will be connected to someone who can offer support and advice.
  • "if in doubt keep them out" and ring Surrey Police on 0845 125 2222 or 999

All staff and volunteers from Age Concern Runnymede will:

Book a visit before arriving – they will never cold call at your doorstep

  • Show their identity card before they enter a property
  • Encourage the householder to remember the importance of doorstep etiquette
  • Allow the householder time to check and verify their ID - Householders can contact the Age Concern Runnymede office (Tel 01932 566040) to verify that the person at their door either works or volunteers for Age Concern Runnymede.
