Superstars from the world of football are set to lend a helping hand to some of the country’s most deserving charities and local groups. Through Creating Chances, the Premier League’s flagship community programme, 120 grants of £4,000 are on offer, with each of the 20 clubs also nominating one of their players to visit the winning successful group in their area and join in with their daily activities. The contest is open to all registered charities, not-for-profit organisations, schools, and voluntary and community groups. Organisations must be located within a 90 minute drive of one of the 20 Premier League clubs to be eligible to apply, and should demonstrate how any funding and player visit would help to raise the profile and awareness of their work. Last year’s scheme saw former Liverpool left-back John-Arne Riise - whose father had died from lung cancer – launch an anti-smoking campaign on behalf of the Roy Castle Foundation, whilst Newcastle United’s African stars Geremi and Obafemi Martins substituted St James’ Park for the supermarket as they packed bags to help Meningitis UK . Other highlights saw the combative Robbie Savage show a more artistic side as he became a poet for the day to encourage schoolchildren in Blackburn to read, Manchester United’s Owen Hargreaves had a stint as a hospital tea-boy, whilst German international Dietmar Hamann worked in a soup kitchen for the homeless. Richard Scudamore, chief executive of the Premier League, said: “We want to build on last season’s achievements where we successfully showcased all the work that takes place right across the league on a daily basis. “This is a very important initiative because community engagement is now woven into the fabric of football and the size and scope of that commitment today really is something of which the Premier League, our clubs, and the players can be extremely proud.” The deadline for applying to this year’s scheme is 1 August. Successful organisations will be notified in the first week of September, with the player visits taking place during the autumn.
